Self-Determination
AADD Partners In Policymaking
Partners in Policymaking is an innovative leadership training opportunity designed to involve and empower people with developmental disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, and other family members.
Self-Determination and Choice in Waivers
The Department of Human Resources and The Department of Community Health (Medicaid) have a plan to start changing things in waivers so people can start to direct their own support. The plan was given to the Governor, and it says that starting in 2004 a small number of people who are on the ICWP or MRWP will have an individual budget, be able to hire and fire their own attendants, and work with a Fiscal agent to help them pay for their support.
The initial implementation with a small number of participants will start in 2004, and then people will be added as time goes on. The DD Council is working with advocates to form an advisory board to inform policymakers how we want things to work, and to make it easy for people to make their own choices about their support. Let Beth Spinning know if you would like to participate or be on the Advisory Board with Council members - bspinning@dhr.state.ga.us or (404) 657-2126
Independence Plus Grant
Georgia received an Independence Plus Grant from the Federal Medicaid Office (CMS) to start Self-Determination in all services for people with disabilities, and older people. This grant ties all the pieces together and will help build Real Systems Change in Georgia. The Grant will work with people in the program, self-advocates, and family members to create choice and give people responsibility for their own support. An advisory group will work on this grant, and focus groups will be held throughout the process, so if you want to get involved let us know! Darlene Meador with the Division of MHDDAD is working on the grant - dmeador@dhr.state.ga.us or you can contact Beth Spinning at the Governor’s Council - bspinning@dhr.state.ga.us
